OUR EXPERTISE
Common Dryer Machine Issues we fix everyday in Toronto & Hamilton.
Dryer won’t start at all:
You press the power button, but nothing happens—no lights, no sound. This is a very common issue we can diagnose, whether it’s a faulty door switch, a thermal fuse, or a power supply problem.
Dryer isn’t heating:
The drum is spinning, but your clothes are still cold and wet. This is one of our most frequent calls. If your dryer is tumbling but not producing any heat, it’s likely an issue with a burnt-out heating element, a bad thermostat, or a failed thermal fuse—all parts we regularly replace across the GTA.
Dryer is making loud squealing or banging noises:
Loud, unusual noises are disruptive and a clear sign something is worn out. We often find this is caused by a worn drum roller, a frayed belt, or a failing idler pulley, which are straightforward fixes for our technicians.
Dryer is taking too long to dry clothes:
When a dryer takes two or three cycles to do the job of one, it’s usually a ventilation issue. We can check if your machine’s airflow is restricted by a clogged vent line, a common problem in Toronto homes and condos that can also be a fire hazard.
Dryer shuts off mid-cycle:
A dryer that stops mid-cycle is frustrating. This is often caused by a faulty thermostat, a clogged vent causing the machine to overheat and shut down for safety, or a failing motor—all issues we handle daily.
The drum in my dryer won’t spin:
If the motor is humming but the drum isn’t turning, you most likely have a broken drive belt. This is a common wear-and-tear part that we can quickly and affordably replace.
Dryer is overheating or has a burning smell:
An overheating dryer is a serious concern that should be addressed immediately. The cause is usually a clogged vent or a malfunctioning thermostat, preventing proper temperature regulation. Our technicians can resolve this dangerous issue.
The automatic cycle leaves clothes damp or over-dried:
When your dryer’s moisture sensor fails, the automatic cycles become useless. We can clean or replace the sensor, restoring the machine’s efficiency and protecting your clothes from damage.
My dryer is leaving marks on clothes:
This alarming issue is often caused by worn-out drum seals or glides, which can leave residue on your laundry. We can replace these components to get your dryer running cleanly again.
The dryer won’t stop running:
If the dryer doesn’t shut off automatically, the problem is typically a faulty timer motor or a broken cycling thermostat. We can fix this to ensure your dryer stops when it’s supposed to, saving you energy and preventing over-drying.
Dryer Machine Repair F.A.Q.
How much does dryer repair typically cost in Toronto?
While the final cost depends on the specific part and the complexity of the job, a typical professional dryer repair in Toronto is often much more affordable than buying a new machine. The service call includes a diagnostic fee to identify the problem. Afterward, the technician will provide a flat-rate quote for the total cost of the repair, including parts and labour. For common issues like replacing a thermal fuse, belt, or roller, repair is almost always the most budget-friendly option.
Is it better to repair my dryer or replace it?
The decision to repair or replace your dryer usually comes down to three factors: age, brand, and repair cost. Generally, if your dryer is less than 10 years old and the repair cost is less than half the price of a comparable new machine, repairing it is a wise investment. Dryers are durable appliances, and a simple repair can often add many more years to their lifespan, especially for quality brands. For built-in or stacked units, repair is almost always preferable to avoid the high cost and hassle of replacement.
What are some simple dryer problems I can troubleshoot myself?
Before calling for service, there are a few things you can safely check yourself:
- Check the Power: Is the dryer securely plugged in? Check your home’s circuit breaker to ensure it hasn’t been tripped.
- Clean the Lint Trap: A completely clogged lint filter can prevent proper airflow and affect performance. Make sure it’s clean before every load.
- Ensure the Door is Shut: The dryer will not start unless the door is latched securely. Give it a firm push to make sure the door switch is engaged.
- Check for Blocked Venting: Look at the vent cap on the outside of your house. Is it blocked by snow, leaves, or lint? Clearing this can sometimes solve simple drying issues.
When should I call a professional dryer repair technician?
It’s time to call a professional if you experience any of the following, as these issues often involve complex parts or safety risks:
- The dryer won’t turn on after you’ve checked the power.
- The drum is not spinning even though you can hear the motor running.
- The dryer is running but not producing any heat. This is often an internal component like a heating element or thermal fuse.
- You smell a burning odour. Unplug the unit immediately and call for service, as this is a serious fire hazard.
- The dryer is making loud squealing, thumping, or grinding noises. These sounds indicate worn-out mechanical parts that need replacement.
How can I extend the life of my dryer and prevent future issues?
Proper maintenance is key to a long-lasting dryer.
- Clean the Lint Trap Before Every Load: This is the single most important step for safety and efficiency.
- Schedule Professional Vent Cleaning: The duct that runs from your dryer to the outside of your home can fill with lint over time, creating a fire hazard and making your dryer work harder. Have this vent system professionally cleaned every 1-2 years.
- Don’t Overload the Machine: Heavy, oversized loads put immense strain on the drum, belt, and motor, leading to premature wear and tear.
- Wipe Down the Interior: Occasionally wipe the inside of the drum and the moisture sensor bars (if visible) to remove any residue from dryer sheets, which can affect sensor performance.
